About Bary
A native of Virginia, Bary W. Hausrath attended George Mason University (B.A. - Government and International Politics) and the University of Richmond School of Law (J.D.). He is admitted to practice before the state courts of the Commonwealth.
After getting his start in general civil litigation, Bary launched BaryLaw in 2012 to focus his practice and address the lack of essential planning among modern families.
Bary founded a statewide program of Name and Gender Marker Change Clinics in 2014, which he ran until 2014 after ten years and several hundreds of clients served. At the Clinics, volunteer attorneys received training and help trans and gender nonconforming individuals correct their name and gender marker on identification documents.
His work with the clinics has been recognized by the Virginia LGBTQ+ Bar Association and Equality Virginia. He also received one of the Virginia State Bar's highest honors for outstanding pro bono service, the Lewis F. Powell, Jr. Pro Bono Award.
In 2022, VPM profiled Bary's pro bono work.
Bary serves on the board of directors of Diversity Richmond, the Virginia Poverty Law Center, and the Virginia LGBTQ+ Bar Association (formerly known as the Virginia Equality Bar Association). He is the immediate past president of the Virginia LGBTQ+ Bar Association and a past president of the Richmond LGBTQ Chamber of Commerce.
Bary and his spouse live in Richmond with their furry companions. They enjoy gardening, taking the dog on new adventures, science fiction, and getting out to experience Richmond's many restaurants and cultural offerings. You may also find him playing disc golf or tabletop games with friends.
